Menu sections
Keeping a menu entry highlighted while the visitor is reading a page that isn’t in the menu.
On a site, the menu entry matching the page being displayed is highlighted: visitors can see at a glance where they are. But not all of your pages are in the menu. When someone opens “Our method” from a button on the “Services” page, nothing is highlighted any more, and they feel as though they have left your site.
A menu section solves this: you specify that a page belongs to the “Services” entry, and that entry stays highlighted while the page is being read.
Cases where you have nothing to do
- A page filed in a submenu already highlights the entry that contains it.
- A blog article highlights the entry leading to the blog, and a product page the one leading to the shop, even if the article and the product are in no menu at all.
So all that is left to sort out are your own pages, the ones that aren’t in the menu: a thank-you page, the details of a service, a page opened from a button.
Filing your pages
Everything is done from Pages, where you can see at a glance what is filed and what isn’t: a page that is neither in the menu nor in a section is marked not in the menu, while a filed page shows its section (in Services).
- Click the page name (or its pencil icon): the Edit page window opens.
- Under In the menu, this page belongs to, choose the relevant entry, then Save.
- For several pages at once: tick them, then click File the selection.
To detach a page, go back to the same place and choose No section. Nothing obliges you to file anything: a page without a section works perfectly well, it’s simply that no menu entry is highlighted when it is being viewed.
From the editor
When you are already working on a page, the same setting is found in Page properties, under In the menu, this page belongs to. A preview of the menu shows you the entry that will stay highlighted. It is the same setting as on the Pages screen, not a second one: you never have to do it twice.
