Choosing a hosting provider can be complicated as the offers on the market are numerous and varied.
Free or paid hosting?¶
Hosting is a service that allows you to store your website files on the internet in order to make them accessible from any internet browser. You will find free (and limited) offers on the internet and other paying offers.
Free hosting is often included with your subscription to your Internet Service Provider (Orange, Free, etc). You can use this type of web space to put your first tests online and familiarise yourself with publishing on the Internet.
On the other hand, it presents many constraints of use: slow connection, advertising on the site, non-customized domain name, low storage space, no or very limited databases ..
To host a professional website, we advise you to choose paid hosting as it is the most efficient, reliable and stable solution.
Shared or dedicated¶
A web host uses a server, a kind of large hard drive, to store your site’s data. Providers can offer you shared or dedicated servers.
A shared server has the advantage of being much cheaper than a dedicated server and is very simple to use.
Being shared with other users, you probably won’t be able to modify some parameters and files used for some web applications (php.ini for example) but this is the only drawback.
It is easier to manage and is ideal for beginners and the general public.
In general, it is more stable and above all free, which will be seen in the cost of the subscription to the host.
A dedicated server is more expensive, it is not easy to manage this type of server and you will have to do any security updates yourself.
Linux or windows server¶
