We’re often asked: “If I don’t upgrade to the latest Service Pack, is it still worth updating WebAcappella Fusion?” " The answer is a resounding yes—and to fully understand why, you need to distinguish between two things that people tend to confuse: the Service Pack and the update. They are not the same thing, and it is precisely this distinction that makes the system so valuable.
What is a Service Pack?
A Service Pack (SP) is a major release of WebAcappella Fusion. It bundles a coherent set of new features, delivered as a package and identified by a number: SP2, SP3, SP4… Each release brings real functional building blocks—new components, new containers, new tools in the editor.
For example, SP2 introduced the dynamic color palette and the link checker; SP4 brought flexible containers (Grid and FlexLayout), four new components, and the Shape Divider editor. With each Service Pack, the software gains new capabilities.
Access to a new Service Pack is granted through your license. When you purchase or renew your license, you gain the right to use the features of the current Service Pack, as well as any Service Packs released during your update period. This is the business model that funds the software’s ongoing development.
Service Pack and Update: Two Different Things
Here’s the key point, and this is often where confusion arises. Updating the application is not the same as upgrading to the next Service Pack.
WebAcappella Fusion runs on a single program: the built-in update always installs the latest version of the software for everyone, regardless of your license. It is then your license that determines which features are unlocked. In other words: everyone runs the same up-to-date binary, but the features of the higher Service Pack remain locked until the license has been updated to grant access to them.
Specifically, a software version contains two types of changes:
- Service Pack features — tied to your license. They are only activated if your license covers the relevant Service Pack. This is the “paid” portion.
- Everything else — bug fixes, stability improvements, security patches, compatibility with new versions of macOS and Windows, and adaptations to browser updates. This part benefits all users, free of charge, with no license restrictions.
Patch versions (for example, v4.0.1 through v4.0.6 following the release of SP4) are distributed automatically via the built-in update feature. They require no purchase: simply restart the editor to benefit from them.
Why this system is a good system
This separation of licensing and updates offers concrete benefits, both for you and for the software’s long-term viability.
You pay for new features whenever you want
You are never required to pay to continue using the software you already own. You decide to upgrade to the next Service Pack only when its new features interest you. As long as you are satisfied with your current version, you can keep it—and continue to receive free updates.
New features arrive in coherent stages
Rather than releasing features piecemeal, Service Packs bundle major updates into coherent, tested packages. You know exactly what each release brings, and you can make an informed decision about whether the update is worth it for your needs.
The software stays healthy for everyone
Because patches aren’t reserved for those who pay, the entire user base stays up to date in terms of stability and security. Everyone works on a solid foundation, which reduces incompatibilities and makes it easier for the community to help one another.
Why install the latest version, even without upgrading to the next Service Pack
That’s the initial question, and now you have the answer: even if you decide not to upgrade to the next Service Pack, the latest version offers you a lot. Everything that isn’t a license-locked feature is available to you for free.
- Bug fixes — every reported and corrected issue is included for everyone. Staying on an old version means keeping bugs that have already been fixed.
- Stability — memory leaks, crashes, slowdowns: successive versions iron out these rough edges, version after version.
- Security — security patches for the application and its third-party components are applied without any license restrictions.
- System compatibility — with each new version of macOS or Windows, the software must be updated to continue functioning. An outdated version will eventually fail to launch properly on a recent OS.
- Browser compatibility — the code generated for your sites evolves with web standards, ensuring your pages display correctly in modern browsers.
- Features sometimes unlocked along the way — sometimes features previously tied to the license become available to everyone. After SP4, for example, global dynamic colors are no longer subject to license restrictions: everyone has access to them simply by updating.
The reasoning “I’m not getting the new Service Pack, so I won’t update” is therefore a miscalculation: you’d be depriving yourself of all these free benefits, without gaining anything in return. Installing the latest version is always the right decision—paid features simply remain locked until you choose to unlock them, without affecting the rest.
How to update
Updates are performed directly from the application, via the Help > Check for Updates menu. WebAcappella Fusion downloads the latest version, and all you need to do is restart the editor. If a patch is available, this is the easiest way to get it.
Before updating, be sure to back up your projects. WebAcappella Fusion includes a manual restore point system (menu Project > Create Restore Point)—create one before proceeding. Making a backup copy of the project folder never hurts either.
In summary
- The Service Pack is a set of new features, unlocked by your license.
- The update installs the latest version of the software for everyone; only the features of the higher SP remain locked if your license does not entitle you to them.
- Patches, stability, security, and OS/browser compatibility are free for everyone, with no license restrictions.
- Installing the latest version is always beneficial, even if you choose not to upgrade to the higher Service Pack.
When the new features of a Service Pack make you want to take the plunge, you can upgrade your license from your customer portal. In the meantime, just keep your WebAcappella Fusion up to date: it’s free, it’s safe, and everyone wins.
